Hormone Superfoods Under £1.00 Per Serving

At the moment many of us are feeling the pinch and buying healthy or ‘superfoods’ feels like a luxury. But eating healthy nutrient dense food doesn't have to be something that breaks the bank. In this article I'm going to list my top foods for hormonal health which all come in at less than £1 per serving.

Flaxseeds

A bag of whole flaxseeds will set you back about £1 and contain multiple servings. Freshly ground flaxseeds (add a tablespoon or two to a blender while making a smoothie) are a rich source of phytoestrogens which help to support healthy levels of oestrogen.  In my clinical work I often recommend flaxseeds to women who are experiencing PMS, menopause symptoms and conditions such as pcos or endometriosis.

Beans

Beans are a fantastic superfood for a few reasons. Not only are beans a lean protein but they also count towards your 8 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. When it comes to hormonal health, beans are a source of something called inositol. Inositol is helpful for supporting healthy blood sugar levels which is important for hormonal balance as when your insulin levels rise, your sex hormone binding globulin levels (SHBG) reduce. This is significant for your hormonal health because SHBG manages your testosterone and oestrogen levels.

Eggs & Broccoli

All hormones eventually make their way to your liver to be detoxified before leaving the body. Eggs are a rich source of sulphur which is important for a phase 2 pathway in the liver called sulphation. Broccoli (fresh or frozen) is also a great way to support phase 2 detoxification.

Chia Seeds

Once your body has processed your hormones, it will leave your body via urine, sweat or through the digestive system through a bowel movement. I like my clients to be having two healthy bowel movements per day and chia seeds are a great way to support both transit time and bulking the stool. Try adding chia seeds to smoothies or over soups and salads.
